Highly porous and degradable metallic implant materials

A degradable magnesium implant with a fiber structure was developed at Fraunhofer IFAM in Dresden as a solution for the treatment of larger bone defects. The implant serves as a guiding structure during growth. Growth is particularly stimulated by the favorable biomechanical properties of the implant. After healing, the implant disappears. These characteristics have also convinced companies like Botiss Biomaterials GmbH. The licencee plans to implement the material in oral surgery and is currently evaluating the construction of a suitable production chain.
